I started building a calculator. The calculating bit is already done and works perfectly with a binary output. I also already made the 4 seven segment displays. First, i had this design by Banjobeni for the Decoder: When i had this decoder implemented it displayed the technically correct but unreadable hexadecimal version of the answer.

I checked it a few times with a converter online and the outcome was correct. But i wanted to have it display proper decimal numbers. So i took Also from banjobeni this design: The problem was that it was also 4 bit while my calculation output was sixteen bit. I put 4 of those next to each other without interfering and tested the thing. It started displaying strange numbers when the answer of my calculations was higher than 9.

It seemed logical since the decoder received a number higher than 9 and wasn't able to give the correct display number since it wasn't there. It couldn't pass it to the other decoder to display the excess value on the other screen.

So i understand what is the problem but don't know how to fix this. Is there any way to weld these decoders together to make it a bit decoder? Thank you all BeMacized. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack. As you've discovered, you can't just bolt a load of single digit decoders and displays together and expect it to Correctly display a large binary number in decimal. What you need is a Binary to BCD convertor, so you get the Decimal Digit as 4 bits each, then put each of those through the 7 segment decoder to the display.

I'd highly recommend you look at Minecrafter9's Compact and Speedy bit Binary to Decimal decoder. Last edited by DaftasBrush: Thank you so much for responding. Now i look at it it seems so logical. I will try now: It seems that i can't find a schematic or tutorial anywhere just for this decoder. The problem with the link u gave me is that its so compact.

My calculator is far from compact since i try to understand how it works rather than just copying the whole thing. Its too compact to understand. Is there a place where i can download any schematic for just this component? Thank you very much BeMacized. They go directly into the displays and i have just a few lines on the ground: Last edited by BeMacized: I don't think that this will work. A 16 bit number can be all between 0 and Even if you split the decoder up to 32 layers which is maybe already not possible, it would take about four times the lenght of maximum chunks loaded
